Learning Support Unit

If your child requires extra help with any aspect of learning, we shall be happy to provide lessons in our Learning Support Unit.

We have five staff, all of whom are experienced teachers with additional qualifications from either the Dyslexia Institute, the British Dyslexia Association or RSA. We believe in a pupil-centred approach so that your child will receive the help which he or she needs in a secure environment where he/she is encouraged to take full responsibility for his/her learning.

We are proud of the fact that we still provide one-to-one tuition and consider it extremely important that, for at least one lesson per week, pupils have the opportunity to address their own specific difficulties and to bring, in confidence, any problems that they may have concerning their academic work. A second lesson per week may be shared; in this situation a pupil may be following his/her own individual education plan alongside another pupil following his/her own, or he/she may be taught in groups of two or three but only if this a appropriate to the needs of the students.

We make every effort to ensure that lessons are time-tabled carefully so that students do not miss factual subjects in which they may be examined or those at which they excel or those they simply enjoy. If a pupil does not take a particular subject, e.g. French, we do our best to see him/her during those lessons; we aim to see Year 10 and 11 students in their free time.

We can give learning support in all aspects of English and Maths, together with tuition in memory revision and study skills, thereby helping the student tackle learning problems in any subject up to GCSE and beyond.

We believe firmly that if a pupil with specific learning difficulties is to achieve his/her maximum potential and grow in confidence and self-esteem, it is important to maintain consistent liaison with the Headmaster, subject staff and, of course, yourselves the parents. We therefore hold regular meetings and aim to give you information, support and advice whenever needed. We can also arrange for visits by and educational psychologist and for special arrangements for GCSE.

We look forward to helping you and your child.
