Life at Ballard School
We asked what the pupils thought of life at Ballard School
Activities
Activities are an extension of the curriculum and designed to stimulate the mind; develop skills; encourage healthy bodies and nurture new interests. They cover a wide sphere, catering for the needs of the individual. Most of all, they are fun and a great way to end the day.
Subjects
The curriculum is broad and designed to meet the needs of our modern society, but still keeping a strong emphasis on good basic knowledge. Pupils in the Senior Department can follow a predominantly academic, a predominantly practical or a curriculum comprising both academic and practical elements.
Subject specific teaching starts at a young age (Year 3, age 7) and in subject specialist rooms. The choice of subjects is vast and the school only appoints staff with extensive subject knowledge.
The Pre-prep follows the National Curriculum, but specialist music and PE/Games teaching starts in the nursery (age 2).
All subjects are given equal priority – all pupils are encouraged to develop as many skills as possible.
Sports
Sports are an integral part of the curriculum. Pupils also enjoy a wide choice of sports after school during activity time and these complement the basic team sports played during the curriculum time. In addition, PE lessons focus on skills in disciplines such as gymnastics, trampolining, volleyball, basketball, tennis, dance, weight training and much more. Competitive matches are played throughout the week against other schools, while all pupils enjoy regular inter-house matches.
The school aims to create a healthy balance between competition and participation. All pupils are given the opportunity to play in matches.
School lunches
A family style meal service for the early years pupils ensures a friendly and well-supervised dining experience. The lunch service is provided between 12.pm and 1.35pm. This gives us the opportunity to change the sittings of years groupsd, to ensure that no one year grouop is always last in.
Special diets for all ages can be catered for subject to discussion with the Domestic Bursar.
