Food Technology

Food Technology

Following the national curriculum for D & T food technology it gives the students a great chance to learn about food preparation, safety and hygiene, with a huge emphasis on practical cookery. Year 7 follow a basic skills course concentrating on use of equipment and nutrition. They regularly cook making hot chocolate, baked potatoes, soup, fruit crumble and chocolate chip cookies.

In Year 8 & 9 their skills increase looking at healthy eating, and good nutrition. New recipes are made and adapted, such as bread making, pastry, and muffins.

Year 9 sees the students’ progress even further concentrating on two tasks, designing a pasta ready meal and a celebration cake.

The skills and enjoyment the students have for food is apparent at Ballard, with the practical element loved by many. Cooking is a life skill that all Ballard students have.

There are two cookery clubs one for Year 7 and one for Year 9 & 10. These are always very popular.
