Each year the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust organise a national mathematics competition for 11-18 year old pupils in the UK. The Maths Challenges are lively, intriguing multiple choice question papers, which are designed to stimulate interest in Maths. Last month Ballard School entered 46 pupils from years 9-11 into the competition. We are delighted to reveal that eight pupils achieved Silver certificates and a further eight achieved Bronze.

His talk was illustrated, with photographs and video of the exploration work on the sea bed, mostly in waters around the UK.

On Thursday the 14th January, Year 9 travelled up to London, to watch Billy Elliot at the Victoria Palace theatre, do a short drama workshop, and sprint around the Tat Modern! Everyone had a great time, and thoroughly enjoyed the day.
Seeing Billy Elliot was a truly spectacular experience. With a fantastic set, mind-boggling choreography and a rather daring script, this amazing musical really picks you up , puts you in 1984 and shows the agony of the mining families during the strike.

The temperature was below zero, frost sparkled on the forest and ice turned puddles into skating rinks. Did this deter the Yr 9`s from taking part in their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh walk on Saturday? Not a bit of it! They revelled in it, shattering ice plucked from every pond, puddle and pool.

Congratulations to former Ballard pupil, Charlotte Jenkins, she has received a scholarship to go and spend a year (starting in July 2010) studying at the oldest University in New Zealand. It is the Otago University at Dunedin in the South Island. One of her tutors at Durham University suggested that she was a strong candidate and should consider applying for the place being offered so Charlotte applied for the scholarship in November and has just been told that she was the successful candidate.
