HOME STUDY

What follows are some subject-specific topics for your child to do at home, should it not be possible to get into school on any particular day. The topics tie into our long-term curriculum plans and so will certainly be relevant to the course we follow.

• Getting ready to start: have some paper and pens handy; use a file to separate out the subjects (with file dividers if possible to organise this well); make use of any books you have at home but, if possible, access the internet to research information; the TV also has some excellent educational programmes (examples below); there are specialist educational sites. I think the best site is http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/ which has all the subjects for both Primary and Secondary. Bitesize now reaches to KS2 and KS3 in English, Maths and Science. It has sections for parents, teachers and students. Next week there are programmes on the Discovery and National Geographic channels that are always of interest. I note that BBC4 has a series on Anne Frank which should be fascinating.
• Getting underway: it’s a good thing to make notes as you go along about the topics; try to avoid simply printing out chunks from the internet but some extracts / pictures / maps / diagrams etc will help illustrate a topic; with some subjects (especially the humanities) you will find it helpful to ask questions as you go along and even use these as headings, e.g.:
• Who?
• What?
• Why?
• When?
• Where?
• The finished product: presentation is important – colour, headings, spacing etc all help

Do enjoy this and bring into school when you can. There may be special prizes in subject areas!
