Forest School & Beach School

At Ballard, we believe that learning should be an adventure. Our bespoke Forest School, launched in 2018, is a cornerstone of our outdoor learning ethos. Set within our 34-acre stunning grounds, we have three dedicated Forest School environments – one for Nursery and KG, one for Pre-Prep, and one for Lower Prep – designed to nurture curiosity, independence, and resilience. Pupils also enjoy our beautiful Victorian Water Garden pond, where they can fish and dip for aquatic creatures, learning about ecosystems and biodiversity in a hands-on way.

Children thrive when they can explore, create, and take ownership of their learning. Forest School gives them that freedom. Whether they are fire-striking, toasting marshmallows, building dens, creating fairy kingdoms, sawing wood, or making mud kitchens, pupils learn practical skills while developing perseverance and confidence.

Seasonal activities like blackberry picking for tie-dye projects connect them to nature and creativity.

Benefits for our pupils:

  • Builds confidence and independence through child-led exploration.
  • Enhances problem-solving, critical thinking, and creativity.
  • Promotes well-being and resilience, supporting emotional regulation and perseverance.
  • Strengthens social skills through teamwork and shared experiences.
  • Encourages environmental awareness and respect for nature.

Beach School at Ballard

Our location is truly unique – just minutes from the beautiful south coast. This proximity allows us to offer Beach School, extending outdoor learning beyond the forest to the shoreline. Here, pupils experience hands-on learning in a dynamic coastal environment, exploring marine habitats, tidal patterns, and environmental stewardship.

Beach School sessions include science investigations, creative art projects using natural materials, and team challenges on the sand. Pupils learn about sustainability and the importance of protecting our oceans, while enjoying the physical and mental health benefits of being outdoors.

Benefits for our pupils:

  • Deepens scientific understanding through real-world observation and experimentation.
  • Fosters creativity and imagination in an inspiring natural setting.
  • Supports mental health and well-being through fresh air and physical activity.
  • Builds community and teamwork, encouraging collaboration and communication.
  • Instills a sense of responsibility for the environment and climate awareness.

Why Ballard?

Our extensive grounds and coastal location give pupils unparalleled opportunities to learn beyond the classroom. Forest and Beach School are not add-ons – they are integral to our curriculum, shaping confident, resilient, and curious learners who carry these skills throughout life.
