Mathematics is one of the most widely applied subjects in the world—and at Ballard, it’s a core part of our curriculum, underpinning learning across a wide range of subjects, including Science, Computing, and even English.
We see Mathematics as more than just numbers. It is a powerful tool for developing logical thinking, problem-solving skills, and the ability to break down complex challenges into simple, manageable steps. These are essential life skills, and ones that are increasingly valued in today’s fast-paced, technology-driven world.
Teamwork is central to our approach. Pupils regularly work together in pairs or small groups, building communication skills and confidence as they explore ideas and solve problems collaboratively.
A lifelong love of Maths:
At Ballard, we aim to inspire a lifelong enthusiasm for mathematics. Whether it’s solving everyday problems, interpreting data, or preparing for careers in science, finance, engineering or beyond, our pupils leave us with the confidence and skills to thrive in a rapidly evolving world.
Pre-Prep
Building the foundations:
Following the variety of the practical mathematical activities in Nursery and Kindergarten, Ballard pupils feel very comfortable with Mathematics when they join Pre-Prep. We build on this and help stretch the more able, whilst supporting those who find some topics more challenging.
There are lots of exciting approaches to learning Mathematics in Pre-Prep and our pupils look forward to their lessons. Whether it is using the computers and iPads to test their skills or working with whiteboards in front of their peers, our pupils are keen and eager to get involved.
Lower Prep
Laying Strong Foundations:
In Lower Prep, we follow a helical learning model, where key concepts are introduced at a basic level and revisited regularly, each time with greater depth. This ensures strong understanding and long-term retention.
Our lessons are creative and inclusive, using a variety of engaging teaching methods to help pupils feel both challenged and supported.
We integrate technology through interactive learning software, which pupils can access at home to reinforce their skills.
Each child is nurtured at their own level. More able pupils are stretched with extension work, while others gain confidence through repetition and guided support. Mathematics is also explored through other subjects, helping pupils see its relevance in the wider world.
Upper Prep
Deepening Knowledge, Inspiring Curiosity:
In Upper Prep, we use the highly respected White Rose Maths programme, designed to raise standards and develop deep understanding. Pupils enjoy a mix of engaging worksheets, practical tasks, and interactive online resources.
We continue to nurture problem-solving and logical reasoning, with pupils encouraged to apply their mathematical skills across subjects. Many also take part in the UK Maths Challenge, a prestigious national competition that promotes advanced thinking and resilience.
Senior
Confidence, Challenge, and Real-World Skills:
In Senior School, pupils follow the Edexcel IGCSE in Mathematics, a rigorous and internationally respected qualification.
More able pupils may also study Additional Mathematics (OCR), an excellent stepping stone to A-Level Maths and Further Maths. This advanced course helps pupils deepen their understanding and prepares them for mathematical study at the highest level.
Opportunities for enrichment continue, with many Senior pupils taking part in the UKMT Maths Challenge, often progressing to the follow-on rounds.
