Science

Science is about understanding and modelling the world in which we live, and applying that knowledge to improve our lives through invention and technology.

At Ballard, pupils benefit from hands-on practical work in small classes, taught by subject specialists in fully equipped Science laboratories. They are supported by a dedicated laboratory technician, and our emphasis on inquiry-led learning fosters independent thinking, problem-solving, and growing confidence.

We are proud to offer:

  • Small class sizes for individual attention
  • A dedicated laboratory technician supporting practical work
  • Emphasis on inquiry-led learning, fostering independent thinking and confidence
  • Highly qualified staff with academic and real-world experience in scientific industries

Pupils are encouraged to take ownership of their learning, while still feeling part of a supportive and enthusiastic team. Our Science Department plays a full role in the wider life of the School, collaborating with other departments — especially within STEM.

We also contribute actively to the PSHE programme at Ballard, delivering expert input on key topics such as diet, smoking, reproduction, and drug education, alongside discussion of ethical and moral issues rooted in Science.

The First Steps in Science:

Ballard’s youngest scientists begin their journey through exploration and discovery in our classrooms and the expansive School grounds. Whether identifying trees, hunting insects, or measuring liquids, pupils are encouraged to ask questions and enjoy finding their own answers.

They have access to specialist Science equipment and can use our laboratories when appropriate. We cherish their natural curiosity and we celebrate the moment their faces light up with understanding.

We love children who ask why, and we enjoy seeing the delight on their faces when they work out answers for themselves. Whether it is measuring liquids, identifying trees, or hunting for insects in the Bluebell Woods, our pupils love their Science lessons.

Hands-On, Minds-On:

In Lower Prep, Science is brought vividly to life. Lessons focus on active investigation and are designed to spark awe and wonder. Each class enjoys access to a specialist Science lab and an impressive array of equipment and resources.

Our beautiful School grounds — from meadows and woodlands to ponds and streams — are frequently used for ecological studies. Pupils not only explore the natural world but also take action to protect it. Our Eco-Committee, formed by Lower Prep pupils, has led meaningful change across the School and proudly earned the prestigious Green Flag Award.

Confidence Through Discovery:

In Year 6, pupils follow a programme designed to ignite their curiosity and build core scientific understanding. They take part in the national CREST Discovery Awards, working in collaborative groups to investigate, record, and present their findings.

By Years 7 and 8, they follow a tailor-made Key Stage 3 Science curriculum, created by our team to build strong foundational knowledge and essential skills that prepare them thoroughly for GCSE success. Pupils have three Science lessons per week, with a strong emphasis on practical learning.

Highlights include:

  • Hands-on projects like making sparklers or investigating energy through pendulums and wind-up toys
  • The CREST Bronze Award, giving pupils a real-life experience of working as young scientists
  • Development of enquiry, problem-solving, and communication skills that support every area of learning

Academic Depth and Real-World Links:

Ballard pupils begin their Science GCSEs in Year 9, following the AQA Combined Science: Trilogy course. At the end of the year, pupils can choose whether to continue with Combined Science (earning two GCSEs) or to study the Separate Sciences (Biology, Chemistry, and Physics) for three full GCSEs.

Each Science discipline is taught by a specialist teacher. Pupils undertake a series of Required Practicals and are assessed through terminal exams at the end of the course. Digital learning is supported via access to various online materials curated by the Science department.

We also believe in learning through creativity. One class recently built DNA models out of sweets — a fun and memorable way to reinforce complex ideas.

Our alumni have gone on to study Medicine, Radiography, Biomedical Science and other Science-based degrees. Many return to speak to pupils about their journeys and inspire the next generation of scientists at Ballard.
