Ballard School at the Gothia World Youth Cup 2026
The 2026 Gothia Cup proved to be an outstanding experience for Ballard School’s representatives, who joined fellow Prep School Lions players in competing at the world’s largest international youth football tournament.
Across a memorable week in Gothenburg, our players had the opportunity to test themselves against teams from 34 different nations, experiencing different cultures, styles of play and levels of competition. While the football itself was of a very high standard, the wider experience delivered just as much value, helping players develop confidence, resilience, independence and friendships that will last long beyond the tournament.
For Ballard pupils Matthew Ross (Year 8) and Euan MacMillan (Year 9), the Gothia Cup represented the culmination of a journey that had begun many months earlier through the Prep School Lions trial and development process. Following successful performances at trials, players attended training camps and development events before travelling to Sweden to represent the Prep Schools on an international stage. As one parent noted:
“The whole experience, from initial trials to the game against AFC Bournemouth Academy, to the training weekend in Tunbridge Wells and of course the week in Gothenburg after an amazing opening ceremony, has been fantastic.”
The tournament itself presented a number of challenges and opportunities. Matthew’s Under 12 Orange Lions squad faced early disruption following flight cancellations affecting parts of the team, resulting in some players arriving in Sweden only hours before their opening fixtures. Despite these setbacks, the team demonstrated admirable resilience and adaptability throughout the week. Their efforts were rewarded with an outstanding run to the semi-finals of the Shield competition, where they were narrowly defeated by just one late goal against a strong team from Guatemala. The achievement was particularly impressive given the challenges faced at the start of the tournament and highlighted the players’ commitment, determination and ability to respond positively under pressure. Across the week, Matthew participated in nine matches over five days, gaining invaluable experience at the highest level of youth football.
Euan’s fellow Ballard representative, Mac MacKenzie, was part of the Prep Schools Lions Red squad. The team competed against Askims IK and Spånga IS FK of Sweden, as well as Concordia Eschersheim of Germany, progressing successfully through the group stages to reach the knockout rounds. A convincing 3-0 victory over IF Skjoldar of Norway secured a place in the final 32 before the team eventually bowed out to Brommapojkarna DFF of Sweden, who went on to win the competition. Throughout the week, the squad showed tremendous improvement, teamwork and determination while creating memories and friendships that will last a lifetime.
Ballard was also represented by Toby and Paolo, who were members of the Lions Boys Under 13 Greens squad and enjoyed an exceptional tournament. The team progressed all the way to the quarter-finals of the B Cup, an outstanding achievement. Many of the boys were regularly competing against players a year older due to the way age groups are structured internationally, making their success even more impressive.
The Greens faced tough Icelandic and Swedish opposition in their opening two matches before producing an excellent 4-0 victory against another Swedish side to secure their place in the knockout stages. A commanding 14-0 win over German opposition in the next round further boosted confidence, and by this stage the boys were beginning to develop a strong understanding of each other’s game and establish their identity as a team.
Their next challenge was an all-English Lions derby in the Round of 32. It proved to be a tense and closely contested encounter, but the Greens showed tremendous determination and came out on top with a deserved 2-1 victory. Progressing deeper into the competition, the team faced a talented Portuguese side in a fiercely competitive and physical match. The referee certainly had his work cut out throughout the game, but the Greens remained focused on playing positive, attacking football while their opponents continually tested the limits of the rules. Some exceptional goals from the Lions, combined with a straight red card for the Portuguese team, helped create an unforgettable atmosphere as the crowd celebrated a memorable victory.
Reaching the final eight, the Greens then faced an outstanding and highly skilful Brazilian team. The boys battled superbly throughout the match and, at 1-0 down, were unfortunate not to score an equaliser when an apparent goal was not awarded despite strong claims that the ball had crossed the line. The Greens continued to fight until the final whistle but eventually lost 2-0. Afterwards, however, the mutual respect shown between the players underlined one of the true values of the Gothia Cup: football bringing young people together from all corners of the world.
Parents were particularly complimentary about the standard of coaching throughout the programme. Matthew’s family praised his coach, Ben O’Neill, and the positive environment that was created for the players. Such feedback reflects the commitment of the coaching staff to ensuring that every player develops both on and off the pitch while enjoying the experience to the fullest. Encouragingly, the coaching team is already looking ahead to next season, with plans to keep many of the squad together and build upon this year’s success.
Away from football, players embraced everything Gothenburg had to offer. The spectacular opening ceremony at the famous Ullevi Stadium was a particular highlight, bringing together more than 50,000 players, coaches, parents and supporters in a celebration of international sport and friendship. The parade of nations, live entertainment and fireworks provided an unforgettable start to the tournament.
Throughout the week, players enjoyed opportunities to explore the city and make the most of the tournament experience. Many visited the Heden Centre to watch top-class youth football from around the world, while others enjoyed attractions such as Liseberg Theme Park, the Gothenburg Archipelago, beach volleyball, crazy golf and the city’s Science Museum. Families supporting the teams also enjoyed a range of social events, adding to the sense of community that surrounded the tournament.
The success of the tour cannot be measured solely by results. While the Prep School Lions teams performed exceptionally well, with four squads reaching the semi-final stages, the Under 12 Orange Lions reaching the Shield semi-finals, the Under 13 Greens reaching the quarter-finals of the B Cup, and the Under 12 Girls securing an impressive third-place finish in the A Play-Off competition, the greatest achievements were the personal and social development of the players. Living, travelling and competing together encouraged players to grow in confidence, independence and resilience while representing both Ballard School and the Prep Schools with pride.
Ballard families highlighted the confidence gained, friendships formed and memories created through the experience. Parents spoke warmly of the enthusiasm shown by players throughout the week and the unique opportunity to meet young footballers from all corners of the world. One parent reflected that, in their child’s own words, the Gothia Cup had been “the best experience of my life”, underlining the profound impact the week had on those involved.
Their experiences reflect the wider success of the Prep School Lions programme and the value of providing young players with opportunities to challenge themselves against high-quality opposition from around the world.
The Gothia Cup 2026 will undoubtedly remain a highlight of Ballard pupils’ sporting journeys and a memorable chapter in our school’s footballing story. Beyond the football itself, the tournament provided a unique opportunity for young people to experience different cultures, challenge themselves against elite opposition and develop lifelong friendships. The overwhelmingly positive feedback from players and parents alike demonstrates the tremendous value of the experience, and we hope many more Ballard pupils will be inspired to follow in their footsteps when nominations and trials begin for next season’s Prep School Lions programme.
